I currently am driving my second Millenia My first was a 1996 Millenia S and my current is a 2002 Millenia P (non-supercharged). I consider the Millenia to be the best vehicle I've ever owned.
The Millenia is a bit of an interesting vehicle. To understand that you need to know its story. It's a single-generation, meaning there was only one Millenia from 1995-2002. It was originally to be a part of Mazda's luxury line, Amati, which never was introduced because of the financial crisis that hit Japan in the 1990's. The new factory in Japan, however, and the car's design were ready to go, so Mazda introduced it in 1995 as a Mazda.
The Millenia is not like driving any other Mazda. The car was simply built to higher standards than other Mazdas. The ride is what I describe as "sexy smooth." It's neither particularly sporting in the mold of the Acura TL nor is it a soft-sprung luxury-boat like the Lexus ES or GS. The Millenia falls somewhere in between and it's just a delight of a vehicle to drive. The car handles beautifully, particularly the 2001-2002 models, which have a strengthened chassis. Braking is excellent and the front-wheel drive really helps in bad weather. Both the Millenia S and the base Millenia have ample power. I've owned both, so I can be objective on this one. The Millenia S has an over-abundance of power and the base Millenia is merely adequate. Don't take that to mean the base model is slow. It's not. It's nowhere near as under-powered as a 4-cylinder Camry or Accord. Both are V6, but the S model is definitely the rocket-ship of the two. At higher speeds, the Millenia S is clearly the superior model. The base model just doesn't have as much oomph at the high-end.
The automatic transmissions shifts well and with a firm "kick" in each gear, typical of Mazda.
The interior is carefully crafted and well laid out. I would recommend the 2001-2002 models because of the electroluminescent gauges. From 1995-2002, the cars didn't change a lot on the interior. My 1996 model had a "glove box" in the rear deck that was a great place to store stuff. The 2002 omits the glove box and replaces it with a center-channel speaker. Nice, but I'd rather the glove box. The door pockets aren't conventional. Instead of open pockets, they have hinged lids on the top that lock closed. If you didn't look carefully, you'd think the car didn't have pockets in the doors, so look closely. Inside, you'll find the deepest door pockets in the industry, ample for holding a binder or more. Dump your mess of stuff inside and close the lid: Neat and tidy.
The car is very reliable. The Millenia S is just as reliable as the base model with one exception: My '96 Millenia S required replacement of its vacuum hoses when it was 8 years old (2004). The car had a check engine light and went into limp mode (max 45 mph). The mechanic knew exactly what was wrong. A few rubber hoses later, and the car was good as new. Those vacuum hoses are for the supercharger and you wouldn't see that problem on the base model but rubber deteriorates after 8 years.
The best part of the car is the value: They have awful resale value so you can snag a decent 2002 model for $7000 or less. The car is an overlooked gem. Smart buyers on a budget should take a careful look at this car. You'll save thousands over Camry or Accord and get a nicer car that's just as reliable and actually MADE IN JAPAN!
Make sure you get one that's well taken care of and happy motoring!
